Sluts are a figment of the patriarchal imagination…” –Nicole Ouimette

“You know there is a rapist out here, right?”

I pause, unsure of what exactly is happening. A Brooklyn police officer is now standing directly in front of me, so close I can see his uniform stitching and smell his breath. I have gone from one moment of existing in a headspace of bills, groceries and what I might eat for dinner to staring directly into the chest of an officer whose height and presence turns my stomach into a sickly knot.

“So you know, be careful with what you’re wearing.”

The New York Police Department calls this a rape prevention tip. While this one incident pales in a privileged comparison to the regular violence and surveillance that the NYPD is known for, especially among communities of color, it’s safe to examine the irony that merely a night before I was set to go to a march whose roots began out of Toronto police calling women “sluts,” police in my own neighborhood would somehow see it fit to warn women in the surrounding area about not dressing too “scantily” as to not entice a rapist to rape them.

Not surprisingly, there was little media coverage regarding the inanity of the Brooklyn police stopping women and giving them supposedly helpful fashion tips. The Daily Mail UK saw the absurd connection between the two incidents, but stateside and even locally, there was only a rare mention of the incident. One of the interviewed witnesses said of her own interaction with the police, “He pointed at my outfit and said, ‘Don’t you think your shorts are a little short? He…said they were showing a lot of skin’ and that ‘you’re exactly the kind of girl this guy is targeting.’” This incident right here, this type of policing of clothing, is only the tip of the iceberg of the deep pervasiveness of rape culture, slut shaming and victim blaming.

For months, media coverage of Slutwalk had put me on edge. Writers like Caitlin Flanagan in the NY Daily News, Gail Dines in The Guardian, Sabrina L. Schaeffe on TheHill.com and Liz Jones in the Daily Mail slammed the movement for its title and insinuated that, like most young women, they just weren’t taking feminism very seriously. As Slutwalk spread around the U.S. and throughout the world, these and other media outlets overemphasized flashier aspects of the movement, i.e. women dressed in what was said to be stereotypically “slutty” fashion, often highlighting the same carefully selected photos of Slutwalk participants over and over: white, thin, relatively good looking, and decked out in their scanty best, often coupled with articles that weren’t necessarily well represented by those photos, as evidenced by The Huffington Post’sNew Delhi ‘Slutwalk’ Brings Global Sexual Violence Protest Phenomenon To India.” Slutwalk participants were often portrayed through a hetero-normative gaze, often seeming like a device of contention to bait for victim-blaming responses, as when an expat commenter on the Daily Mail’s Scantily Clad ‘Slutwalk’ Women March On New York After Police Tell Them To Cover Up To Avoid Rape” remarked, “Advertising your ‘wears’ will always encourage people to ‘sample’ them… simples.”

By using these sensationalized photos over and over, media outlets have framed the discourse around Slutwalk , mostly by reinforcing whose bodies are valued and whose are not. “This, some women say, is SlutWalk’s problem. The name, the outfits; it’s all an implicit demand for attention,” said Sady Doyle in her most recent In These Times piece about Slutwalk NYC:

“Lots of people wonder whether that attention is productive. Those iPhones were not whipped out to record the chants of ‘blame the system, not the victim.’ And I didn’t see any film crew surrounding the girl in denim shorts and a t-shirt, holding a sign that read ‘this is what I wore when I was raped.’”

Clearly, this is more an indictment of the priorities of media outlets than of SlutWalk participants.

That being said, the underrepresentation in media coverage of Slutwalk participants including trans men and women, women of color, and those participants dressed as they would in their every day lives illustrates the way in which SlutWalk is forced through a sensationalistic frame in many media outlets, even while this frame misses the larger story. This media coverage fetishsizes the more “scandalous” parts of the march, yet ignores signs that described the normalcy of the clothing worn on the day when marchers were sexually assaulted or raped. Several participants of NYC’s march also reported to Slutwalk NYC organizers that random men observing the rally took upskirt photos of them without their consent. This type of harassment is illustrative of the very same rape culture that Slutwalk participants are marching against; men who feel that if a woman is dressed a certain way, her body becomes consumable public property and okay to photograph for upskirt websites – or otherwise assault – without her consent.

Not all media outlets fell into the trap of uniformly sexualizing and trivializing the marchers. Back in May, Harsha Walia noted on Rabble.ca:

“I expected to see only a handful of women of color, mothers and children, older women. I was surprised at the actual diversity on the streets, not captured by photographers seeking sensationalist images of bras and fishnets. There was no attempt to recruit everyone into one uniform vision of femininity, nor was there an overarching romanticizing of “sluttiness”; sexual autonomy was being self-determined by each participant.”

Along with this positive example came another aspect to the media presence of Slutwalk I want to talk about: the question of whose critiques have been allowed to rise to media prominence, and whose have been present mostly in social media and blogs. While the corporate press published quite a few high-profile attacks on SlutWalk in the mode of what I discussed above, unfortunately the media has muted the valid criticisms Slutwalk has received from women of color in regards to the privilege required to use the word “Slut” as a rallying cry. Groups like Black Women’s Blueprint, Af3rm, The Crunk Feminist Collective, and writers such as Aura Blogando, Keli Goff, Stephanie Gilmore and many others have argued that Slutwalk continues a larger marginalization of the bodies and voices of women of color. As Tamura Lomax argued in her WIMN’s Voices analysis of media coverage of SlutWalks through May:

“I’m a black feminist who stands in solidarity with the overarching intentions of many of those who have organized varying SlutWalks. I believe that women should have the right to perform and display their sexual tastes in whatever way they deem fit—without being branded in the pejorative, getting accosted, or worse, being told that both of the above is in fact their fault. That being said, SlutWalk begets a raised black feminist fist from me—along with a perfectly arched, uplifted eye-brow.”

Why an upraised brow? Lomax continues:

“How does one truly reclaim such profoundly cross-pollinated terminology already present within our individual, social, cultural, political, institutional, and even economic landscapes, especially when one is raced, classed, and/or sexualized in the pejorative? Indeed, to proudly claim oneself a “slut” (meaning, to boldly and explicitly claim one’s sexual liberty), with little to no socio-political consequence, is (sort of) a privilege… many women of color are hurled into a racialized, hypersexual body cast from birth. Thus, many of us can only imagine what life outside of its shadows must feel like. African American women and girls in particular have always been on the underside of both victim blaming and hypersexualization… When African American women and girls are raped or violated they are often not even seen as “true” victims. Of course, SlutWalk exists because ALL women have the potential to experience this reality. Any given cop or journalist can decide that a woman dressed inappropriately, drank too much, walked down the wrong street, stayed out too late, hung out with the wrong crew, etc., and thus placed herself in a questionable position.”

Further evidence of this dichotomy is represented by the injustice of the DSK case and the media’s treatment of Nafi Diallo, whether by portraying Dominique Strauss-Kahn as the actual victim in the case, much like Bernard Henri-Levy at The Daily Beast, or the now-notorious cover by the New York Post that claimed that Diallo was actually “Cleaning up as a ‘hooker’ ”– a claim that was made on an ethically questionable anonymous source who stated “There is information . . . of her getting extraordinary tips, if you know what I mean. And it’s not for bringing extra f–king towels.”

The tension over SlutWalks as a means of primarily protecting the rights of white women crystallized when New York magazine’s “Not Asking For It: Scenes From Slutwalk NYC” slideshow chose to include this photo of a young, white woman cheerfully holding a sign using an ugly racial slur.

The photo is damning, to say the absolute least–as is the magazine’s choice to include the picture. At Colorlines, Akiba Solomon heavily criticized the sign as “an attempt to get noticed,” once again asking the question, “Does “SlutWalk” tell the uninitiated—quickly—that a person’s attire, behavior, sexual identity, line of work, immigration status, physical disability, age, lack of sobriety or lack of common sense is never an excuse for rape?” At Racialicious, Latoya Peterson went further:

“ …can you appropriate a term like nigger if your body is not defined/ terrorized/ policed/ brutalized/ diminished by the word? Can we use it in a context that is supposed to belie gender solidarity, without explicitly being in racial solidarity? I think not. And I am not alone.”

And for maximum visceral impact, Sofia Quintero at BlackArtemis uses a clip of the pivotal pigs-blood-dumped-on-head scene from the classic horror movie “Carrie” to explain that “That’s how that shit feels when you uses the n-word.”

Depending on whom you speak to, the photo either encompasses all that’s wrong with Slutwalk and the continuing erasure of women of color from the feminist movement, or it encompasses the thoughtlessness of one privileged, racist individual (as well as those around her who did not consider the hurtfulness of the sign) who thought appropriating a racial slur was okay, an action that is not condoned by the organization which is itself made up of many women of color. These are the issues that deserve debate in the larger media, not stories of “floozies in short skirts” or “young women not taking rape seriously” accompanied by photos that focus on the provocative instead of highlighting the actual message of the marches. Reporting and commentary with nuance that address the positives and negatives of this emerging movement could inform the public about the many intersecting concerns that have been bringing so many protesters into the world’s streets, from governmental and law enforcement abuses to cultural victim blaming, to the prevalence of sexual violence itself… while also shining a truthful spotlight on the ugly, racially-charged divisions that have plagued some of these marches.

Several organizers of Slutwalk NYC have publicly spoken out against the sign on sites like Racialicious, as well as several personal blogs. An official statement and apology has been made on the Slutwalk NYC website in regards to the photo and the organization’s response. Organizers will be holding an open discussion at Walker Stage on October 13th to discuss ways of making the New York group more inclusive, as well as addressing any further concerns and criticisms.

While there seem to be only a handful of very limited representations of Slutwalk in the media, there are thousands of personal narratives and other accounts of Slutwalk created independently and circulating through social media. Most of these nuanced and challenging narratives do not get picked up so easily by the press. So, rather than ending with more media analysis, I would like to present to WIMN’s Voices readers my video documentation of Slutwalk NYC.

This compilation of participants speaking in their own voices proves the diversity of thought and of the SlutWalkers themselves. There are some who refuse the reclamation of the word “slut,” some who take pride in it, some to whom “slut” is merely a secondary logo and is less important than the movement’s larger goal of fighting sexual assault against all women, and some who feel like Slutwalk is just another example of abiding racism present within the larger feminist movement. This is an evolving movement that will change over time and deal with the many intersections of a seriously broken culture; hopefully with the mentality of what is best for all. This will happen by listening to those who feel they are unable to access this movement or refuse too. It has to be done by re-routing, changing, failing, succeeding and above all, listening to many different voices, with the trust that their experience is an authority. That is the only way to move forward, otherwise, history just repeats itself. And that advice can be applied equally to the evolving SlutWalk movement itself, and to the print, broadcast and online media which have sometimes used SlutWalk to spark new and need conversations about violence, but often covered the movement in ways that have advanced rape culture.

I leave you all with this video of what happened on October 1st, 2011, just as a glimpse of what I saw that day (including an interview with the editor of WIMN’s Voices):

One thing I’d prefer to touch upon is that weightloss system fast may be accomplished by the perfect diet and exercise. Someone’s size not only affects appearance, but also the quality of life. Self-esteem, despression symptoms, health risks, and physical abilities are impacted in weight gain. It is possible to just make everything right and still gain. If this happens, a problem may be the perpetrator. While an excessive amount food but not enough physical exercise are usually accountable, common medical ailments and widely used prescriptions can certainly greatly enhance size. Kudos for your post right here.

One thing I would like to say is before getting more pc memory, have a look at the machine within which it will be installed. If the machine is actually running Windows XP, for instance, the particular memory limit is 3.25GB. Setting up in excess of this would easily constitute a new waste. Be sure that one’s mother board can handle the actual upgrade volume, as well. Great blog post.
