Newsweek And Sexism

March 22nd, 2010

An interesting piece by several women who work at Newsweek discusses the progress of women at the magazine since the early 1970s. … Outside the question of sexuality, the culture now does tell younger women that they can be anything they want if they work hard enough, though this suggestion is made before one enters the labor force or has any children. I suspect that the transition from college to the labor force is when some women hear that feminist alarm clock ringing. And ringing and ringing. It’s ringing, because the job of making the world a fairer place was only begun and not finished.

No Orgasms For You, Old Ladies

Want to take a walk with me? We shall stroll down the virtual path I took this morning after seeing the headlines in my Google news about a new study which has tried to map out a person’s “sexual life expectancy”: the expected number of year of sexually active life one can anticipate to have left at any given age.

The headlines told me that the study found a correlation between good health and a longer sex life for both sexes but more for men. They also told me that men had the longer “sexual life expectancy.”

I Haz Teh Sadz

Because of that crappy post at Huffington Post and the whole idea that women are now terribly unhappy because feminism failed them. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that this isn’t what our Arianna is selling us. She’s very unhappy herself, because she is running a website rather than washing floors back at home. But getting more clicks at the expense of feminists is well worth the tears she sheds.

Wake Up And Smell The Estrogen!

That sentence was on the cover of one of the old Ms. magazines I just put into the trade basket in my library, and it makes a very good kick-in-the-pants beginning for this rant. And a rant it will be.

To begin with the Bitch magazine is in financial trouble and it needs your dollars to continue. You can donate here.

How To Dis Women, Hilariously

February 29th, 2008

Joel Stein gives us a very handy lesson on that in his most recent column, fetchingly called “A little something for the ladies.” Note the term “ladies” and the “little something”! Could it be….a diamond ring? Ooh, shiny! Gimme, gimme! If not I shall stomp my tiny foot and cry! And you will not get laid for a century at least!

The column isn’t about what to give your little lady on Valentine’s Day to get the blowjob you’ve paid for, nope. It’s about women as political animals. Well, as political pet animals, really. It’s also a very very funny column, and I’m going to show you how you, too, can write a funny column like that.

Once Upon A Time

There lived a political pundit called Chris Matthews. He had his very own show on television, intriguingly called “Hardball”, and the show attracted many famous and powerful politicians and many erudite and experienced analysts of politics. Matthews would chat with them on the topics of the day, often expressing iconoclastic and funny opinions. All his friends knew that he had a good heart and that he spoke too rapidly, but otherwise he was a prince among men. And he called it as he saw it. An upright reporter, a warm and compassionate human being, a famous celebrity. What’s not to like?

How Feminism Killed the Neanderthals

November 10th, 2007

The Boston Globe headline screams: “Stone Age feminism? Females joining hunt may explain Neanderthals’ end.” There you have it. Feminism kills species. That is one of the few horrible things I had not yet heard attributed to feminism. And to find it among the science news of the major newspapers! […]

The Terror Dream. A Book Review

November 6th, 2007

Susan Faludi’s The Terror Dream. Fear And Fantasy in Post-9/11 America. has a poorly picked title. Yes, the book is about fear and fantasy in the U.S. where “9/11 changed everything”, but it is not about all the fear and fantasy that was changed or that stayed the same. It is, quite specifically, about the way our views of gender were pushed and pulled after the massacres and about the way the massacres were retold so as to fit them into an old national myth: the one about the courageous men defending the innocent virgins and pregnant mothers.

Girls Rule But Shouldn’t

My title gives you the very short version of a very long article “The New Girl Order” by Kay S. Hymowitz in the City Journal . And what is “the new girl order”, according to Hymowitz? It is a world where young women delay marriage because they just want to have fun. Think “Sex and the City”:

On Cleavage

July 27th, 2007

I didn’t chime in when the question of Hillary Clinton’s cleavage was analyzed, because I’m more interested in analyzing cleavage such as shown in the above photo.
Just kidding, though not quite. If you were lucky enough to miss the cleavage story, it was based on an article Robin Givhans wrote in the Washington Post. […]
