Deepa Fernandes's Biography

Deepa Fernandes is the host of a three hour morning radio show called Wakeup Call on Pacifica Radio station WBAI in NYC. Deepa is an anchor for Pacifica's national programming team, having covered many events from the 2004 political conventions and debates to the Presidential Innauguration to the launching of the new global television network in Venezuela called TeleSUR.

Deepa is a bi-lingual journalist who has worked with the BBC, the ABC, NPR, and Pacifica Radio. She is a well-traveled media activist who has produced award-winning features and documentaries about forgotten peoples with marginalized voices. Recently, she completed a three year stint as anchor for the nationally syndicated daily news show, Free Speech Radio News.

Deepa is the founder and co-director of Radio Rootz: Youth Media Collaborative. She was the recipient of a 2003 OSI Community Fellowship. She is the author of the forthcoming book: Targeted; National Security and the Big Business of Immigration from Seven Stories Press. Her writings have appeared in the Village Voice, In These Times and Alternet, among others.
