Celia Alario's Biography

Celia Alario is a media strategist, communications consultant, media skills trainer and affinity marketeer with more than 15 years experience working to support grassroots environmental and social justice organizations and coalitions. On staff with groups such as Rainforest Action Network and the United Steel Workers of America, and through her consulting firm-- ‘PR for People and the Planet’-- she has helped spin groundbreaking corporate accountability campaigns, pitched stories about high profile civil disobedience direct actions and law suits, co-coordinated media efforts for mass mobilizations such as the 1999 meeting of the World Trade Organization, provided one-on-one trainings for incoming Communications Directors, landed dozens of stories about critical social justice issues in prominent national and international media outlets and trained thousands of activists in basic media skills at conferences, convergences and action camps.

Alario has also worked on political campaigns, most recently as Press Secretary for the ‘Fix Three Strikes: Yes on 66’ campaign in California in 2004 and as Press Secretary for Arianna Huffington during the Gubernatorial Recall Campaign in 2003.

Alario has provided publicity and affinity marketing for documentaries and books, including Sir! No Sir!, Michael Moore’s ‘Bowling for Columbine’ and Thom Hartmann’s ‘Unequal Protection: The Rise of Corporate Dominance and the Theft of Human Rights’. Committed to fostering ‘media that matters’ and building bridges between media makers and social change practitioners, Alario is currently advising on affinity marketing strategies for two forthcoming documentaries, a narrative feature and a television series. She pioneered a graduate level public relations course at USC Annenberg School for Communications called ‘PR for Social Action’.

Also experienced as a journalist, Alario produces public affairs programing at her local community radio station in Moab, Utah, KZMU (a Pacifica affiliate). Alario co-produced and co-hosted ‘Terra Verde’ and ‘Flashpoints’, two public affairs shows on Pacifica Radio’s KPFA in Berkeley, California for six years and was Associate Producer on the second season of Michael Moore’s Emmy-nominated television show ‘The Awful Truth’. She has also produced a series of television Pubic Service Announcements and organizational videos for her clients. Alario serves on the Board of Directors of ITVS Independent Television Services, and on the Advisory Board for Business Ethics Network and Iraq Veterans Against the War.
