DeAnne Cuellar's Biography

DeAnne Cuellar is an independent media maker, and the San Antonio Project Director of the Texas Media Empowerment Project (Texas MEP). After an FCC localism hearing in 2004 she helped to start Texas MEP with the Office of Communication, Inc., and local grassroots organizations in San Antonio, advocating media justice for historically under-represented communities. She has been actively organizing within the independent music community for more than fifteen years, and she currently blogs about music, media, and technology on KrakMyApple. DeAnne works with many social justice organizations, individuals, and media reform groups to establish a coherent vision for media justice that includes: challenging racist, sexist, homophobic, and classist representations of San Antonio and South Texas communities through media monitoring; educating around media justice and the interconnections of issues such as race, gender, class and sexuality; and sustaining a community media environment that strives for media justice and media advocacy for underrepresented communities.

A differently-abled Texana-Xicana, Deanne is an expert in media and communication technologies and is working to start "Bra Camp," a technology-inspired skills program for women. And don't try to take her down on the roller derby rink, where she's unbeatable!

Just a few of Deanne's proudest accomplishments include:

* Co-Founder and Leadership team member for MAGNET, the Media Activist Grassroots Network

* Creative Director, LadyFestSATX (www.ladyfestsatx.org)

* Worked with over 183 local community producers to re-establish public access channel in San Antonio, Texas

* Co-Organized the 2008 Texas Community Media Summit in Austin, Texas

...and that's just the beginning.
