Let’s Help End the Mommy Wars

Hello, everyone. I’m just getting up to blogging speed, but I do want to call attention to Lakshmi Chaudhry’s excellent takedown of Caitlin “Mothers Shouldn’t Work (Except Me, Of Course)” Flanagan, about whose new book you might have already heard many a grumble. Chaudhry’s piece, written for In These Times, is up today on AlterNet, and, as always with AlterNet, much of the most interesting (and, okay, infuriating) reading comes from the copious reader comments. But one commenter offers up some news you really can use: A new petition, created by the advocacy group Mothers Ought to Have Equal Rights, calls for a “Ceasefire in the Mommy Wars,” and will be circulated to the heads of television networks in the hope that the divisive stories pitting working and stay-at-home mothers against each other can end, already. So get there, sign it, and check out the other resources at the site, including a list of talking points for those irate letters to the editor.
