Radio interview: Indy press stands strong against censorious, sexist “progressive” corporation

Tune in Tuesday morning to KPFK’s Uprising Radio (or log on for an audio archive) to hear host (and WIMN’s Voices blogger) Sonali Kolhatkar interview freelance journalist (and WIMN’s Voices blogger) Keely Savoie and Clamor magazine publisher Jen Angel in a lively discussion of sexism, commercialism, union-busting, and “sweatshop-free” clothing co. American Apparel’s attempts to control independent media content critical of AA’s official and unofficial corporate policies.

Keely has a provocative piece in the forthcoming issue of Clamor , exploring the many problems inherent in American Apparel’s media and marketing strategies. As Keely wrote earlier today in this blog, her piece is part of a critical spread that American Apparel would prefer not see the light of day. The company is threatening the indy mag with legal action unless they pull their pieces — and their punches. Luckily, as co-publisher Jen Angel has made clear, Clamor has no intention of capitulating to AA’s intimidation.

In addition to checking out Clamor’s sneak preview PDF (and buying the September issue - or better yet, subscribing to the mag to support their continued independent journalism), folks interested in learning more about this company’s efforts to censor independent, critical journalism — and about Charney’s sexual harassment of female journalists, such as the Jane reporter he masturbated in front of during an interview — can check out the following:

      heads up:
After nearly 6 months of work and hundreds of hours of interviews and research, Knowmore.org is releasing its special report on American Apparel, LLC.

When Knowmore’s American Apparel entry came to the attention of CEO Dov Charney, he called to challenge our representation of his company, and demanded we take a closer look. He also offered us unprecedented access to his factory, workers, and management, which we accepted and engaged.

The result is this report; which represents the most complete Knowmore.org entry to date, and the most comprehensive look at Charney’s controversial company ever published.
