Quick post before I catch the plane to Chi-town for the BlogHer conference, just to let you know about three ways you can connect with this blog’s host organization, Women In Media & News (and with me) if you’re in the Chicago area this week:
1. Saturday, July 28, 10:30 - 11:45AM
Attend “Earn Our Votes: What Questions Do Women Bloggers Want Candidates To Answer in Election 2008?”, a panel/working session I’ll be participating in at the BlogHer conference where, on behalf of WIMN, I’ll help participants come up with strategies to improve media coverage of campaigns, elections and public policy issues. See BlogHer’s site for logistics.
2. Saturday, July 28, 11:50 - 1:15
Join me and Women In Media & News board member and mommy-blogger Veronica (Roni) Arreola for an informal lunch gathering – byo-lunch; look for the location on site. We’re inviting media activists, journalists and bloggers from the WAMmer (Women, Action & Media) community and the Feminist Blogger’s Network, and any BlogHer attendee who wants to meet up.
3. Thursday, Aug. 2, 7pm (check back here in another day or two for more details)
Don’t Pin Your Hopes on Katie Couric: How Women Can Confront, Challenge and Change Contemporary Media
– a discussion with Jennifer L. Pozner and Anne Elizabeth Moore
Drink some wine, nibble some cheese, and hear me and Anne Elizabeth Moore, one of the leading voices in independent media and publishing (and a WIMN’s Voices blogger) talk about the state of women and the media today, at a fundraiser for Women In Media & News hosted by Chicago’s fabulous Women & Children First feminist bookstore. Donations not required but suggested. Program description below – logistical details to follow. And because WIMN has been chosen as Women & Children First’s Organization of the Month, you can bring this handy-dandy 10% donation coupon to the best bookstore in Chicago and splurge on all those books you’ve been meaning to pick up, and WIMN will get 10% of your purchase price (talk about your win/win/win: you get great books, magazines, postcards, etc., a feminist independent bookstore gets your business, and WIMN gets support). Email info[at]wimnonline[dot]org if you would like an Evite to this event.
Don’t Pin Your Hopes on Katie Couric: How Women Can Confront, Challenge and Change Contemporary Media
– a discussion with Jennifer L. Pozner and Anne Elizabeth MooreWhy do journalists consider Hillary Clinton’s “fat thighs” newsworthy in coverage of her presidential bid, while Dick Cheney’s beer belly is never noticed by political reporters? Are women all really vapid, pathetic, gold-digging whores, as so-called “reality” TV producers would like us to believe? Feminist media activism and independent media production can interrupt this misogynistic media landscape – but how can either survive in a fractured funding climate? These are just some of the meaty issues that will be tackled in a dynamic conversation between Jennifer L. Pozner, founder and executive director of Women In Media & News (WIMN), the national media analysis, education and advocacy group and the host of the popular WIMN’s Voices group blog, and Anne Elizabeth Moore, publisher of the dearly beloved but recently-deceased Punk Planet magazine and author of Hey Kids: Buy This Book and the forthcoming Unmarketable: Brandalism, Copyfighting, Mocketing and the Erosion of Integrity. As two of the leading voices in women’s media activism and production, Anne and Jennifer will explore issues facing contemporary women in media content, production and policy, and offer strategies and solutions you can use to pursue progressive, feminist media change. (Note: This will be a fundraiser for WIMN: donations not required, but suggested.)
4. Bonus chance: If your Chicago-based social justice or community group is interested in organizing a media training between July 30 and Aug. 3, there’s still time. Email info[at]wimnonline[dot]org or contact WIMN online.
