As I sit against the florescence of the television screen, watching the conservative Fox News pundit Glenn Beck drive political nails into progressive leaders using the fear of U.S. blacks and immigrants of color as his hammer, my memory harkens back to the year in which the book Push was set, 1987. During that time, […]

South African teenager Mokgadi “Caster” Semenya won the 800 metres race at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Berlin last week with what has been described as “a stunningly dominating run.” Unfortunately, her victorious debut in international sports has been clouded by controversy over her sexual identity. Many media reports on the issue reflect ignorance about the distinction between sex and gender.

I don’t care what Miley Cyrus’s parents think. But if you have “tween” daughters — or if you are a tween or teen girl — you probably should.
Not only did Monday night’s Teen Choice Awards feature Miley Cyrus atop an ice-cream cart in booty short and high heeled boots, […]

I’ve never seen HBO’s Hung. Long hours, new baby, refusal to give Comcast one more dime of my money. But I’ve heard it’s good, one of those things that, like The Wire, or Mad Men, or Weeds, I’d have to content myself with getting to a season (or three) after everybody else, […]

Seriously, even Vogue has an annual “Shape” issue where they patronizingly allow someone as (*GASP*) huge as Beyonce or Kate Winslet on the cover in addition to their usual sub-zero model roundup… then offer drastic dieting tips… all while mysteriously claiming to promote body acceptance: And don’t miss the small print under the […]

I’ve been twittering about Fox’s new plus-sized dating show, “More To Love,” at @jennpozner and @RealityTVBook (and will livetweet it tonight), and I invite you to join me at Twitter tonight with questions and comments about the debut episode.
Ironically, I haven’t had time to blog about this show — or much else — lately, because […]

Report-back from the Women’s Media Equity Summit: Visioning Activity
Note: I can’t possibly type as fast as the women in this group speak, so I’ll do my best to capture the essence of what is said, and as a journalist I will attempt to quote accurately. But, understand that there will be typos, paraphrased comments, etc.
Youth […]

On Friday, shortly after Sarah Palin declared her independence from her job as Governor of Alaska, I posted this request to Twitter:
@jennpozner: Feminists & progressives, let’s b on lookout 4 #palinsexism –if u see blatantly sexist coverage, call it out. (h/t @addiestan 4suggestion)
On Monday, NPR asked me to write an oped on sexism in […]

When Nadya Suleman gave birth to octuplets, a media firestorm erupted. First came stories playing on the well-worn “wow factor,” highlighting the medical curiosity. Initial headlines were simple, exemplified by this UK Times story: “American Woman Gives Birth to Live Octuplets.” The AP’s piece, posted on Fox News’ […]

Since it’s nearly 1am and I’m blogging from a spotty wifi connection at a hotel in Corvallis, OR, this is just going to be a quick follow-up to yesterday’s post about WIMN’s lecture tour in Oregon this week.
So, quick reminder: I hope all of you in the Portland, OR area will come out to […]
