Precious, my Precious: Black Female Citizenship, Complexity, and the Politics of Unrelenting Survival

During that time, […]

She would get an additional $22 a month if Congress actually passes Obama’s proposed bill, intended […]

September 29th, 2009

Sotomayor’s elevation to the high court should inspire the many she is said to represent –women, Latinas/non-whites– and the nation that has presumably been enriched by the social advancement that her confirmation heralded, to embrace the challenges that were left in the wake of “progress.”

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that this isn’t what our Arianna is selling us. She’s very unhappy herself, because she is running a website rather than washing floors back at home. But getting more clicks at the expense of feminists is well worth the tears she sheds.

A case of sexual policing?

August 25th, 2009

South African teenager Mokgadi “Caster” Semenya won the 800 metres race at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Berlin last week with what has been described as “a stunningly dominating run.” Unfortunately, her victorious debut in international sports has been clouded by controversy over her sexual identity. Many media reports on the issue reflect ignorance about the distinction between sex and gender.

Reposted from Viva la Feminista and Feministe
In the last six months or so, Chicago has had its fair share of townhalls and gatherings trying to figure out what the heck is happening with corporate media. What will happen when the newspapers finally fail? Will they? Where did the journalists go? After the first townhall, that […]
